Why Study Medicine at the Flinders University Darwin Campus?

Flinders University has been teaching medicine for 50 years, beginning with their first intake of undergraduate medical students in 1974, followed by the opening of Flinders Medical Centre. Flinders was the first in Australia to offer a graduate-entry medical course in 1996, and for the past 12 years, they’ve proudly taught medicine in Darwin.

Flinders has a strong profile in medicine and continues to be at the forefront of innovation in teaching and research. The Flinders MD is recognized nationally and internationally for its innovative curriculum, now used by other schools in Australia and overseas.

For those interested in the underserved populations in rural and remote areas, Flinders further provides rich and innovative student clinical placements across clinical schools in Darwin, Nhulunbuy, Katherine Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Bedford Park, the Riverland, Mount Gambier and the Greater Green Triangle, the Adelaide Hills, Mallee, Fleurieu and Barossa Valley.

About the Doctor of Medicine
The Flinders University graduate entry MD combines leading academic and clinical education practices and experiences to deliver its highly respected medical program. The first 2 years of the program are for students to develop strong foundations in clinical sciences, pathophysiology, communication, and clinical procedural skills prior to undertaking the more clinically focused final years.

To help medical students to become competent professionals and improve their learning, first-year students are allocated a Learning Coach, who provide individualized coaching and support. Coaching occurs during one-on-one meetings with students at various stages throughout their 4-year MD program.

Students enjoy interactive classes with an emphasis on working in small teams, which creates a quality learning environment where students and academics know each other on a first name basis. In years 3 and 4, students will be studying alongside teachers, clinicians, and academics at the Royal Darwin Hospital.

Throughout this degree, students have many unique clinical education options and are part of rotations in health delivery in rural and remote communities. The program is based at Casuarina Campus and the Royal Darwin Hospital, Alice Springs and Katherine Hospitals, with outreach to general practices and community clinics across the Northern Territory.

Flinders is ranked in the top 2% of universities in the world (THE World University Rankings 2024 as a percentage of the total number of universities in the world according to the International Association of Universities) and No. 1 in Australia in Medicine for full-time employment according to The Good Universities Guide 2024 (postgraduate).
