Overview

The La Trobe University Department of Community and Clinical Health is a leader in entry-to-practice courses, graduate research degrees, and continuing professional development programs.

La Trobe designs its courses with your future career in mind and partners with a range of professional organizations for accreditation and registration. Graduates may apply to practice in the United Kingdom, North America, Sweden and other countries, subject to each country’s registration requirements.

The Master of Occupational Therapy Practice at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus is accredited by the Occupational Therapy Council of Australia Ltd (OTC) and is approved by the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (OTBA) and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WOFT).

Program

The La Trobe Department of Community and Clinical Health has facilities and clinics that support health and well-being education, research and practice. Students have access to a purpose-built telehealth facility, laboratory and practical workshop spaces, and public-facing clinics where they apply their knowledge and skills under the auspice of expert clinicians.

As a La Trobe occupational therapy student, you’ll work in the home simulation facility, where you’ll learn how to adapt a domestic environment using assistive devices such as bathroom aids, wheelchairs, and hoists. You’ll develop a skills-based understanding of assistive devices and the factors you need to consider when prescribing equipment for home use.

Clinical Placements (Work-based Learning)
During this program, you’ll participate in one or more supervised work-based learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours, and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills.

WBL provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience at one or more of La Trobe’s local, interstate, or international industry partners or agencies. Placements will generally be arranged by the university.

The program comprises 70 weeks of coursework (35 weeks per year), including 1,000 hours of professional practice. Your first year includes a 4-week full-time professional practice block; second year includes two 8-week full-time professional practice blocks and a 10-week project-based learning placement.
