Overview

Deakin University’s Faculty of Health is one of the largest and fastest growing health faculties in Australia.

When you choose to study occupational therapy at Deakin, you will have the opportunity to build strong industry networks and undertake progressive clinical placements, making you skilled and work ready.

This occupational therapy degree will enable you to assist people of all ages to engage in aspects of daily living. You will help them achieve independence at home, at work, and in the community, and help them enhance their quality of life. You could also work with children with physical or intellectual disabilities, with people who have had accidents or are suffering from medical problems, or people in aged care.

When you’re not in lecture halls, you’ll be putting your theoretical knowledge into practice in Deakin’s occupational therapy labs. These labs are the perfect place to refine your practical skills before you work with real clients during your fieldwork unit.

Program

Studying OT at Deakin University means you will gain the expertise required to provide personalized strategies to work collaboratively with people who have a range of health limitations including those caused by injury, health conditions, delayed development or the effects of ageing.

Starting in your first year, you will take part in a series of supervised placements, giving you more than 1,000 hours of practice education placement in a range of occupational therapy practices. You will gain insight into what it means to be an occupational therapist from day one, and will engage in eight different placement opportunities, more than any other occupational therapy program in Victoria.

World-class occupational therapy facilities
Deakin’s state-of-the-art Occupational Therapy Learning Hub is a large simulation teaching space dedicated to the comprehensive training of OT students. It is complete with simulated kitchen, bathroom and bedroom spaces, all installed with SMART technology. Real-life simulations and assessments display how the technology can be used to assist clients in completing daily tasks, and helps prepare you for your future career.

Clinical Placements
Practice education provides you with an opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. Practice education is embedded within academic units in each trimester of the 4-year course. In each of these units, practice education is a mandatory hurdle requirement. Successful completion of all practice education is required to maintain progression in the course.

A minimum of 1,000 practice education hours will be gained as per The World Federation of Occupational Therapists’ (WFOT) minimum standards. These practice education hours will occur in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, clinics, community health organizations, and private practice. Placements may be in metropolitan, regional, rural and interstate locations and will require you to engage with diverse client groups.
