Next Steps

Our goal for you is to attend your first preference program at the Australian university of your choice. Of course, it is not always that easy as each university has their own eligibility requirements for each program.

Here are some of the most common hurdles students often face when applying to an Australian university.

If you’re unsure of your options, you can always email your student advisor or info@oztrekk.com for guidance. Of course, just because a program isn’t listed on the OzTREKK website, it doesn’t mean we can’t help you with the application process. Just send us an email and we’ll be happy to help!

Medicine

Where can I see what grades have been considered competitive in the past?

Please visit our Eligibility page for past competitive scores.

Do Australian medical schools look at marks from all 4 years or just best 2?

Each university assesses differently. Some calculate grades as cumulative on all years of your degree or weighted or cumulative on final 3 years of your degree.

Find more about GPA Conversions and Eligibility. Also see the chart on the Medicine Overview page to give you an idea of GPA requirements for medical programs.

Official GPA calculations are only completed by the universities.

If I want to apply for January/February intake, can I take a prerequisite course the summer before?

Not all medical programs have prerequisite courses; however, should you choose to apply to one that does, we’ll require proof of enrolment to include with your application.

Completing your course by July/August is strongly recommended, as you’ll have to show proof the prerequisite course is completed to accept an offer.

My grades are excellent. Can the MCAT requirement be waived?

The graduate-entry medical degrees that we represent assess your GPA, your MCAT results, and your performance in an interview. If the medical school has listed MCAT score as part of their requirements for admissions, it cannot be waived, even if your grades are exceptional.

Is it possible to get in an Australian medical school with a 497 MCAT?

In general, we recommend a 507+ to be considered competitive. You can also check out our Competitive Medicine Application Statistics charts (by year) on our Eligibility page to get an idea of what has been competitive for other OzTREKK students.

The graduate-entry medical degrees that we represent assess GPA, MCAT results, and performance in an interview. Supplementary documents such as a personal statement, reference letters, proof of extracurriculars etc., are not considered in the assessment process.

If you’re considering rewriting the MCAT, you’ll want to do so no later than mid-May to be able to meet application deadlines and apply early enough for the rolling programs.

Do competitive statistics tend to increase from year to year?

It depends on the applicant pool in any given year. The competitive stats may change slightly from year to year. Check out our Competitive Medicine Application Statistics chart on our Eligibility page for details. We aim to update statistics by March each year.

Please note, competitive statistics are based on what we have seen in the past. Meeting the competitive average does not guarantee an offer.

Can you apply to different rounds with different MCAT scores?

No, you can only apply once. The MCAT score you submit with your application(s) is the score that’s considered. Re-writing the MCAT for the same intake period is not permissible.

If you do not receive an offer in the first round and your MCAT/GPA is borderline, you may receive an offer on the second or subsequent rounds. You can rewrite your MCAT for a new application intake period.

Do I need to take an admissions test?

The MCAT is required for all graduate-entry medical programs except Monash University’s.

The ISAT is required for the undergraduate-entry medical programs at Monash University and the University of Western Australia.

Can I apply to medical school straight from high school?

If coming straight from high school without any further studies, you are eligible to apply to all six undergraduate-entry medicine programs. Some universities require that applicants have completed Grade 12 (or equivalent) no more than two years previously.

Can I apply to a medical program with a partially or fully completed diploma/certificate/degree?

To apply to a graduate-entry medical program, you’ll need a completed bachelor’s degree. With a partially or fully completed diploma/certificate, you may apply to the undergraduate programs at James Cook University and Macquarie University.

Dentistry

Where can I see what grades have been considered competitive in the past?

Please visit our Eligibility page for past competitive scores.

What are the average marks for entry?

For undergraduate dental degrees, average marks for entry vary by university. Coming directly from high school, the best courses (5-6 depending on province) are assessed for the GPA, along with prerequisites at Grade 12 level. Minimum average requirements range between 83% – 94% with competitive marks typically starting between 95% – 98%.

Coming from university studies, the minimum and competitive GPA requirements start around a cumulative of 3.5 – 3.7/4.0 and go up from there.

How do I meet Melbourne’s DDS prerequisites?

The University of Melbourne’s DDS prerequisites are quite strict and require that you’ve completed approved courses in human anatomy (with an in-person human cadaver lab component), physiology and biochemistry to be eligible to apply.

1. Check Melbourne’s prerequisites
To see if your courses meet the prerequisites, please go to the University of Melbourne’s prerequisites page. Go down to “List of assessed subjects,” select your program’s dropdown menu, and click “International” to download the current list of subjects. Please note this list is updated regularly.

2. Have your courses assessed
If the anatomy, physiology, and/or biochemistry courses that you have completed are not found on this chart, you are required to have your courses assessed by submitting filling out Melbourne’s pre-assessment form and by submitting the required subject syllabus. Visit Melbourne’s prerequisites page and go to “How to apply,” where you’ll find the form under your program’s dropdown. You’re encouraged to submit this form well in advance of applying.

When assessing the human anatomy prerequisite, the university will be looking to see that the course(s) being assessed included a lab component with human cadaveric materials. So, you’ll want to make sure that your courses included such a component and that it is referenced in the course outlines you submit for assessment.

3. Enroll in the missing prerequisite(s)
Melbourne will allow students to take non-award courses during the application season to make up the prerequisites they are missing. This means you can submit your application by the initial deadline with your interim transcript and proof of enrollment for the prerequisite course. Before enrolling in any prerequisite course, check with OzTREKK or the university to make sure the course will satisfy the prerequisite. Usually, Melbourne requires students to complete the course(s) by November of the application cycle.

If you haven’t completed the prerequisite course by the time offers are issued, then the university will issue a conditional offer. When you have successfully completed the required anatomy/physiology/biochemistry course(s), your final transcript can be submitted, and the conditions will be lifted.

What if my DAT is too low or is no longer valid?

If you don’t meet the minimum requirements on your DAT, OzTREKK is unable to submit the application to the universities. As soon as the university receives an ineligible DAT, the application is deemed unsuccessful.

1. Re-sit the DAT
If the DAT sit date is coming up in Canada, you can re-sit the test and hope to receive an eligible score. If you are re-sitting the DAT, make sure that you will receive the official scores before the university application deadline. With the Canadian Dental Association, you can write the DAT up to three times per year (after which there will be a one-year waiting period before being eligible to re-sit). The American Dental Association allows students to write it more frequently, so we often have students take the test in the United States.

2, Apply to another dentistry program
Consider applying to a dental program that doesn’t require the DAT. For dentistry, this means you can apply to the following undergraduate programs:

If you have specific questions about these degrees, please email dentistry@oztrekk.com and we will be happy to assist.

If you haven’t written the DAT, or your DAT is too low or no longer valid, but you have a completed degree, you may be eligible to apply to University of Otago. Please note, Otago has strict prerequisites, so we encourage you to check with OzTREKK to determine if you’re eligible.

Law

Is the LSAT required for Australian university law programs?

Of the OzTREKK-represented law degrees, only Monash University Law School will accept the LSAT, but it is not required. Depending on your GPA, submitting a strong LSAT can make your application more competitive.

Undergraduate Bachelor of Laws programs do not require the LSAT.

Physiotherapy

Where can I see what grades have been considered competitive in the past?

Please visit our Eligibility page for past competitive scores.

You don’t meet the University of Melbourne’s physio prerequisites

The University of Melbourne’s Doctor of Physiotherapy prerequisites require you to have approved courses in human anatomy (1 semester) and human physiology (1 semester) to be eligible to apply.

If the anatomy and physiology courses that you have completed are not on this chart, you must have your courses assessed by submitting filling out Melbourne’s pre-assessment form and by submitting the required subject syllabus. Visit the prerequisites page and go to “How to apply,” where you’ll find the form under your program’s dropdown. You’re encouraged to submit this form well in advance of applying.

When you have successfully completed the required anatomy / physiology course(s), your final transcript can be submitted, and the conditions will be lifted.

You don’t meet the physio prerequisite requirements

Many Australian graduate-entry physiotherapy programs require you to have completed specific undergraduate subjects.

1. Find out if you have the right combination of prerequisite courses
Contact us! We can help you find out which physiotherapy programs might work for your prereqs, and it helps us process your application(s) much faster!

2. Enroll in the missing prerequisite(s)
Most Australian universities will let students take non-award courses during the application season to make up the prerequisites they are missing. This means you can submit your application with your interim transcript and proof of enrollment into the prerequisite course. Before enrolling in any prerequisite course, we advise checking with either your admissions officer or the university to make sure the course will satisfy the prerequisite.

If you haven’t completed the prerequisite course by the time offers are issued, then universities may issue a conditional offer. Please note that not all universities will issue conditional offers and it may vary for each program. It’s always best to check with your admissions officer to see if you course of interest will give conditional offers.

#OzTREKKTip: With our years of experience working with physiotherapy programs, we have found students sometimes lack a qualifying anatomy prerequisite. The best anatomy courses to consider deal with musculoskeletal or gross human anatomy components. BIOL 3701 at Thompson Rivers University is a good online course to take. If you have specific questions about which courses to take, please email rehabsci@oztrekk.com.

Your undergraduate degree isn’t in a relevant discipline

Some graduate-entry Australian physiotherapy programs require applicants to have completed a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as kinesiology, health sciences, or human kinetics. Ask us to find out which universities don’t require prerequisites (but they do expect you to have extensive previous knowledge of at least anatomy and physiology) or that will allow you to apply with non-award courses/credits to supplement your knowledge base and prerequisites.

Take an undergraduate physiotherapy program
If you haven’t completed an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, you may be eligible to apply to a 4-year Bachelor of Physiotherapy program. Have a look at our physiotherapy programs page for more information. If you have questions about this option, please email rehabsci@oztrekk.com.

What is considered a competitive GPA for physio programs?

For graduate-entry physio programs (master or doctor), anything above a 3.1/4.0 cGPA is considered competitive for most of our physiotherapy programs. If you have a cGPA lower than 2.7/4.0, we would not recommend applying.

For undergraduate-entry physio programs, eligible candidates have a high school diploma with an overall average of approximately 85% – 95%, with studies in math, science, and English. Varies by university. Keep in mind, entry is competitive and meeting minimum GPA requirements does not guarantee entry. Candidates with more than 1 year of full-time university degree studies will be assessed based on their university cGPA.

Veterinary Medicine

What if my degree is more than 10 years old?

For competitive programs, many universities will only accept applications from students who have studied within the last 10 years. Universities want to make sure the knowledge that students have is still relevant and that students are prepared to take on additional studies. If you’ve studied more than 10 years ago, consider the following options:

1. Complete another degree
If you haven’t completed a degree within the last 10 years and your program of choice requires it, you’ll need to complete another degree. For some universities, this may mean you can complete a master’s (or bachelor’s) degree in Canada and then apply again.

University of Sydney DVM – You must be able to provide evidence that you’ve passed the prerequisite subjects with at least credit average by showing the official transcript with final mark. There is some flexibility for applicants who have stayed in scientific academia.

University of Melbourne DVM – If you graduated more than 10 years ago, you’ll be required to demonstrate your capacity for continued study. Typically, this would mean demonstrating that your knowledge of the prerequisite subjects is still current by having achieved a mark of at least 70% in each of those subjects within the last three years.

University of Queensland BVSc – Qualifications completed more than 10 years ago may be considered as basis for admission to undergraduate or postgraduate programs; however, credit will not be granted for studies completed more than 10 years ago.

2. Complete additional studies and re-apply

University of Sydney DVM

Must complete another degree – Where there are more than one completed degrees, the best GPA will be used. GPA is calculated over the entire duration of the degree and all years of study are weighted equally. Results from completed honours and postgraduate coursework degrees are included in the GPA calculation. Incomplete degree results will not be included. The discipline of the degree is not considered during the ranking process.

University of Melbourne DVM

Complete additional upper-level science courses – The University of Melbourne will consider upper-year science subjects (300- and 400-level courses), rather than cumulative GPA. Melbourne weights their science GPA 75:25 toward the 400-level subjects, meaning your 400-level courses are weighed 3 times as much as your 300 level. Subjects can be taken outside a degree (non-award) will be considered. Courses must be science subjects Melbourne defines a science subject as a subject dealing with the scientific basis of physical or biological sciences, but not including social sciences such as sociology, human behavior, history of science, economics, philosophy (including philosophy of science), and anthropology. This list is indicative and not comprehensive.

What if I don’t have a relevant degree?

The University of Melbourne DVM program requires applicants have a science degree with a majors in one of the following areas: agriculture, animal science, biochemistry, biomedicine, physiology, or zoology. If you don’t have an applicable degree, consider the following options:

1. Take science-related studies and re-apply
You may re-apply with either a master’s degree or after having completed upper-level science courses (if eligible). The University of Melbourne will consider upper-year science subjects (300- and 400-level courses), either at bachelor’s or master’s level. Subjects can be taken outside a degree (non-award studies).

Melbourne defines a science subject as a subject dealing with the scientific basis of physical or biological sciences, but not including social sciences such as sociology, human behavior, history of science, economics, philosophy (including philosophy of science), and anthropology. This list is indicative and not comprehensive.

2. Consider applying to a different program
If you’re interested in working with animals, but the other options won’t work for you, consider applying to a degree in veterinary technology, zoology, animal or environmental conservation, etc. instead, as long as your GPA meets the minimum requirements.

What if my GPA doesn’t meet the minimum or I’m not competitive?

If your GPA does not meet the minimum requirement for veterinary medicine, we’re not able to submit the application.

University of Melbourne DVM
Complete additional upper-level science courses – The University Melbourne will consider upper-year science subjects (300- and 400-level courses), rather than cumulative GPA. Melbourne weights their science GPA 75:25 toward the 400-level subjects, meaning your 400-level courses are weighed 3 times as much as your 300 level. Results from completed Honours and postgraduate coursework degrees are included in the GPA calculation. Incomplete degree results will not be included. The discipline of the degree is not considered during the ranking process.

Undergraduate veterinary degrees (Sydney BVB/DVM and UQ BVSc)
Take college/university studies – The GPA requirement is lower for applicants with a year of more of post-secondary studies (uni or college).

Consider another program
If you’re interested in working with animals, but the other options won’t work for you, consider completing a degree in veterinary technology, zoology, animal or environmental conservation, etc. instead, as long as your GPA meets the minimum requirements.

What if I didn’t pass the CASPer SJT?

If you failed to meet conditions due to the CASPer situational judgement test, you’ll need to re-apply for next available intake, and you’ll be required to retake the test. Your application must be submitted to UQ before you’ll be able to register for the test.

What if I don’t meet the veterinary prerequisites?

If you haven’t taken courses in the required prerequisite areas, but you are still interested in applying to the program, you will need to make up for this course on your own.

Enroll in the missing prerequisite(s)
You’ll need to provide a transcript showing that you have enrolled in the missing prerequisite(s) before we can submit your application to the university. This will allow the university to proceed with your primary assessment. Once you’ve successfully completed your course(s), you’ll need to provide a final transcript so the university can complete your assessment.

Melbourne and Sydney DVM

  • Take an intro-level university course – Generally, introduction courses work best for the prerequisite requirements as they cover a broad range of understanding.

University of Queensland BVSc

  • Take a high school-level calculus course – Many students do so either through summer school, at another institution, or online. Keep in mind, the course must be a full calculus course. Pre-calculus and math courses which cover only some calculus content will not suffice.
  • Take an intro-level college or university calculus course – You will need to provide the course outline for this subject for a prerequisite assessment to confirm comparability. Be sure to provide the course outline before you enroll! We can ask UQ to assess a course before an app is submitted to confirm the course will meet the requirements.
  • Take a course through Unilearn – Offers a self-paced online course, Senior Mathematics (UNL32), which satisfies the Mathematics B prerequisites requirement as noted in the Bridging Subject table. The Unilearn course allows you to enroll at any time and typically takes 18–26 weeks to complete.

Please reach out to OzTREKK at study@oztrekk.com for details about these options.

What if I lack animal-handling experience?

Some Australian veterinary programs require animal-handling experience as part of their entry requirements:

Sydney BVB/DVM
Requires 5 days of animal-handling experience, which can be part of a paid position, volunteer work, or part of a courses. On the supplementary application, you’ll need to briefly describe your experience and outline the specific tasks/experiences you gained.

Sydney DVM
Requires a minimum of 28 days of relevant work and animal-handling experience. A substantial portion of this must have been completed within 2 years prior to application. You’ll need to include supporting documents for experience, e.g., reference letters, certificates, or forms that provide evidence of the number of hours you worked or volunteered.

Consider applying to the following intake
What a difference a year can make! If you lack animal-handling experience, consider gaining some in the following areas:

  • Animal production industries such as sheep, cattle, pigs, goats, horses, and poultry
  • Veterinary clinical practice
  • Other relevant animal-industry experience including government bodies, charities, and research organizations

Some examples of what the committee might look for in an applicant include

  • breadth of experience across a variety of species, or depth of experience in a particular species;
  • research experience;
  • overall experience and length of experiences;
  • commitment and interest in the profession; and
  • rural experiences.

Occupational Therapy

You don’t meet the required OT prerequisites

Most Australian university occupational therapy (OT) programs require a student to have completed specific undergraduate subjects.

1. Apply to the University of Sydney Master of Occupational Therapy program
The Sydney MOT does not require students to have completed prerequisites; however, previous studies in anatomy and physiology will make for a more competitive application.

If you haven’t completed the prerequisite course(s) by the time offers are issued, then universities may issue a conditional offer. Please note that not all universities will issue conditional offers and it may vary for each program. It’s always best to check with your admissions officer to see if your program of interest will give conditional offers.

Pharmacy

You don’t meet Monash’s pharmacy prerequisites or GPA requirement

If you’re considering the graduate-entry Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours pathway at Monash University, you’ll need to ensure you have both the prerequisite courses and a GPA higher than 70% in a degree completed within the last 10 years.

For Monash, students will need to ensure they have completed the following courses at a level higher than first year, and in a course that spans the entirety of the year, generally as part of a Bachelor of Science:

  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • English
  • One unit of physiology
  • Biochemistry (recommended, but not required)

Though the GPA minimum is 70%, we have found that competitive applicants will have GPAs higher than 75%.

Choose another pharmacy program
If you’re unable to satisfy the Monash requirements, consider applying to another pharmacy program and submitting applications for credit to potentially lessen the course load or duration of the program.

Please email study@oztrekk.com if you have any questions. We’re here to help!

Chiropractic

Your degree is more than 10 years old

Macquarie University will only accept applications for the Master of Chiropractic from students who have studied within the last 10 years. They have found that those students who are even nearing the 10-year mark since previous studies find it more difficult to assimilate back into full-time study and refresh the foundational material independently and simultaneously.

1. Apply to the Bachelor of Chiropractic Science
If your studies are close to or older than 10 years, Macquarie University recommends you apply to the 5-year Bachelor of Chiropractic Science pathway to Master of Chiropractic program. Students who complete the Bachelor of Chiropractic Science pathway are granted credit and can complete the Master of Chiropractic program in 2 years.

You don’t meet the required chiropractic prerequisites

Macquarie University’s Master of Chiropractic program requires candidates to have completed specific undergraduate subjects.

1. Enroll in the missing prerequisite(s)
Macquarie University will let students take non-award courses to make up the prerequisites they are missing. This means you can submit your application with your interim transcript and proof of enrollment in the prerequisite course. Before enrolling in any prerequisite course, check with OzTREKK to make sure the course will satisfy the prerequisite.

If you haven’t completed the prerequisite course by the time offers are issued, the university may issue a conditional offer.

Speech Pathology & Audiology

You don’t meet the required prerequisites

Most Australian graduate-entry speech pathology programs require a student to have completed specific undergraduate subjects.

1. Apply to programs that don’t have prerequisites
Griffith University or Flinders University don’t require prerequisite courses. Alternatively, the University of Sydney Master of Speech Language Pathology program doesn’t have prerequisites; however, you’ll be asked to complete online modules to bring your knowledge up to requirement before the start of the program. Sydney will issue the student a conditional offer with these modules as part of the conditions.

2. Enroll in the missing prerequisite(s)
Most Australian universities will let you take non-award courses during the application season to make up the prerequisites you’re missing. This means you can submit your application with your interim transcript and proof of enrollment into the prerequisite course. Before enrolling in any prerequisite course, we advise checking with either your admissions officer or with the university to make sure the course will satisfy the prerequisite.

If you haven’t completed the prerequisite course(s) by the time offers are issued, then universities may issue a conditional offer. Please note that not all universities will issue conditional offers and it may vary for each program. It’s always best to check with OzTREKK to see if your program of interest will give conditional offers.

Teaching

What if I don’t have a completed undergraduate degree?

You may consider Bachelor of Education program options; however, in some provinces this degree alone may not meet the requirement to return to Canada to teach. You’ll want to familiarize yourself with the provincial teaching requirements before committing to an undergraduate-level teaching program.

If I have already completed a teaching program, are there additional education programs I can pursue?

Yes, students who have a completed teaching qualification can look to build upon their education by completing a Master of Education program. Several different streams are available, should you wish to focus on a particular major. Credit is available, pending on your prior academic courses.

You may also complete this course online.

For more information about your options, please contact OzTREKK at study@oztrekk.com.
