Law

Your legal career starts here. Find out how Canadians are studying at world-ranking Australian law schools—then practicing in Canada.

Australian Law Schools for Canadian Students

Both Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Juris Doctor (JD) programs educate you to practice law and allow you to apply for registration in Canada. The main difference is that the LLB is offered at the undergraduate level, and the JD is offered at the postgraduate level.

LLB students can study the program directly from high school or after having completed some post-secondary studies. In order to be eligible to apply for a JD program, you must have completed your bachelor degree. At some Australian universities, JD programs are fast-tracked, meaning they can be completed in two calendar years.

OzTREKK represents 12 Australian law schools, 3 of which rank in the top 50 in the world according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024: Law and Legal Studies. Australian law schools provide a solid foundation for students planning to practice law in Canada (with the exception of Quebec).

Practicing Law in Canada

Graduate qualifications from an Australian law school are recognized internationally. Canadian students who wish to practice as lawyers upon their return to Canada are required to apply to the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) for assessment as the first step in the accreditation process.

The National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) evaluates the credentials of foreign lawyers or Canadians with a foreign law degree, who wish to be admitted as a lawyer in Canada. Guidelines on the evaluation of legal credentials for accreditation for foreign-trained lawyers are available on the National Committee on Accreditation website.

For more details, please visit our Practicing Law in Canada page, and see our FAQs.

Monash Law is very targeted, professional, and savvy. The campus is situated in the legal precinct of downtown Melbourne and exudes legal excellence. The program is very intense and comprehensive. Be prepared to work!

“The professors are amazing and they make the learning fun”

Bond has the most beautiful campus I have ever seen. The professors are amazing and they make the learning fun and thought provoking. I love that the Juris Doctor program at Bond has small class sizes that allow for hands on learning.

“I like the accelerated option to graduate quickly”

I like the location and the people I've met, but dislike the amount of communication for students in my particular program with information regarding graduation. I like the accelerated option to graduate quickly, taking 4 courses is extremely challenging however especially when you need to work.

“[I like] studying at one of Australia’s top universities”

[I like] studying at one of Australia's top universities, and the opportunities available through the program (int'l learning opportunities). Nothing to complain about. I expect it to be similar quality as what would be expected at a Canadian law school.

“The campus location is really great”

The campus location is really great. International comparative lens to the course content, a campus-like environment (though the vibe is very different from a North American school), long breaks between semesters. Dislike: The administration of the university is centralised away from our professors so it feels unpersonal.  There are not many North American international students in the law school, and the class grew 20% or so this year so classroom sizes are bigger. “Beautiful campus, distinguished profs, and great reputation”

Beautiful campus, distinguished profs, and great reputation. Expensive to attend (obviously) and program size too large. Talk to a new fellow student (a stranger) everyday for a while! Nothing great can happen to you if you don't put yourself out there. If in law school at USyd, [join the] SULS international committee

“Monash offers an excellent law program”

Monash offers an excellent law program and provides great organized activities. Monash is currently lacking other Canadian students. Lecturers have all been awesome so far. Can't think of anything I have disliked about the program.

“Much of the material is relevant to Canadian Law”

The instructor are great, very down to earth, knowledgeable and approachable. The teaching methods are excellent; all lectures/tutorials are recorded, which make it much better to study and learn, especially when it is exam time. For future Canadian students, the law program at James Cook University is world class. Much of the material is relevant to Canadian Law. There is a dedicated law section and law librarian at the university library. Also, the year round sunny and nice weather are a huge plus!

“Prepare to grow as a person”

[I like the] campus and its services, location of the campus. Everything is great! I would say in some cases, the instructors could be really hard markers. Class size is great! depending on class taken some course material is overwhelming. Prepare to grow as a person while studying, getting comfortable with the discomforts of life (social and personal aspects)

“Countless resources available”

Facilities (10/10), help services (10/10).  Countless resources available to students. I dislike short tutorial classes (1h) and long lectures (2h). Should be reversed.

“Class size is good.”

I like the location a lot, it's very lively and close the city. There's a lot of student accommodation for students which is nice. People are very friendly. Class size is good. Just do it!! “…the program is incredible”

So far, the program is incredible. I’ve always had a passion for law and understanding the world around me, and the University of Sydney Law School provides ample opportunity for students to gain vast amounts of knowledge, starting from day one. At the start of the program, the university languidly introduces students to the topics they will be studying in an effort to allow students to figure out how they study best and how they should set up their schedules. But it seems that... Read More

“I’m so glad I made the decision”

I never imagined I'd have the courage to move to a new country and study law but I'm so glad I made the decision. I've learned a lot about myself and grown as a person. The staff is very helpful. Reach out to the Griffith Canadian law students association for additional advice and to guide you when you arrive/throughout your studies. It has worked wonders for me.

Yes, it is a beautiful campus. the social life there is phenomenal and makes me wish I was still a party guy, but the smaller class sizes makes keeping up with programs and finding mentors within the school super easy. “…that practical experience really enhanced my resume and my skills”

They allow you to take master-level courses as well as more electives so that gives you more freedom to choose what type of education and courses you receive. Because of the JD program, you are also able to have the practical experience working both at the Legal Centre at the university as well as other local law firms, and by far, that practical experience really enhanced my resume and my skills and definitely helped me excel in my legal practice... as well as helped get employment here in Ontario.

“The professors often draw from Canadian, American and New Zealand case law”

I love the diverse array of students in my classes and the amazing profs who come from all different backgrounds as well. The professors often draw from Canadian, American and New Zealand case law which makes the lectures relevant and very interesting. Also, the feedback opportunities are very helpful for first-year students. The curriculum is tough and demanding; however, the law school gives you ample tools in order to succeed. The professors are really approachable as well.

“I really appreciated the personal connection between professors and students”

Studying law at Newcastle was a great adventure for me. I really appreciated the personal connection between professors and students, and the opportunity to receive extensive supervised practical training made it well worth spending three years to obtain a comprehensive legal education. On my return to Canada, I was able to complete the relevant exams and start my legal career.
