Student Stories: The Experience of a Lifetime at Griffith University Dental School
Meet Jen. She moved from Alberta, Canada to Griffith University in beautiful Gold Coast, Australia in 2022 to study the Bachelor of Dental Health Science and Master of Dentistry.
Jen now lives on the beautiful Gold Coast and enjoys the pristine beaches and stunning hinterland in her free time. She’s eager to make the most of her experience at Griffith, and is passionate about using preventative dental health to help others, in the same way her childhood dentist helped her to regain her confidence.
What’s it like to study in Australia?
“The Gold Coast is an absolutely beautiful place to study. It has pristine beaches, the hinterlands, everybody’s friendly and everybody’s very supportive. I really enjoyed that about the Gold Coast and about Griffith.”
Why did you choose Griffith University?
“Studying at Griffith, I really value the Griffiths Mates program, the location, being close to the beach in the hinterlands, and the support of my fellow students. This is an experience of a lifetime, and I want to make the most of it. That’s what matters to me.”
Why did you want to study dentistry?”
“I had an amazing dentist growing up and I wanted to be able to help people in the same way that he did. I chose to study dentistry to make an impact in people’s lives and I’m hoping to focus on preventative dental health.”

What do you want to do after you graduate from Griffith University?
“My dream in dentistry used to be on the Canadian Dental Board, to own my own clinic, and to support my community. I think Australia has some great things that could work really well in Canada.”
Thanks to the reciprocal agreement between Canada and Australia that allows international graduates from accredited universities (like Griffith!) from both countries to be considered the same as domestic graduates, it’s actually pretty easy to study dentistry in Australia then practice in Canada.

Studying Dentistry at Griffith University
At Griffith, you’ll gain clinical experience with real patients while you study and get equipped to thrive across this vital field. From the first year of your studies, you’ll be undertaking rigorous hands-on training, working alongside registered dentists and dental specialists in various workplace settings. These include Griffith’s modern 117-chair dental clinic and specialized laboratories in the Griffith Health Centre as well as their network of partner clinics in regional areas.
