Widely acknowledged for its strengths in health studies, Griffith boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including the $136-million Griffith Health Centre, co-located with the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Griffith University’s School of Medicine opened in 2005 with the first students graduating 2008. Today, more than 1,200 graduates are in independent practice or in specialty training.

As a Griffith Medicine graduate, you’ll be prepared for multiple careers, including in specialist clinical practice, primary care medicine, rural medical practice, medical administration, medical research, and medical education.

Program

The Griffith Bachelor of Medical Science, Doctor of Medicine is designed for high-achieving secondary school leavers and provides the opportunity for you to progress directly into the Griffith University Doctor of Medicine.

As a Griffith medicine student, you will develop communication skills and learn about the art and science of medicine in its wider social and ethical context. As a graduate, you will be caring and competent and have a fundamental understanding of the science of medicine.

In your first year, you will be introduced to the basic sciences underpinning medical science: anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry, genes and disease, law and ethics, microbiology, physiology, and epidemiology. You will also undertake a course in “Human Skills in Medicine” which provides you with knowledge and skills in communication and interaction with patients.

In second year, you will study these areas in greater depth and take medically focused courses in immunology, infectious disease, pharmacology, metabolism, structural biochemistry, and molecular genetics, as well as undertaking a capstone course (Integrated Medical Sciences) which integrates and applies the knowledge of basic sciences learned in your first and second years.
