Prestigious WHO internship awarded to UQ School of Medicine PhD student
UQ School of Medicine PhD candidate, Mr Mohamad Assoum, has been awarded a prestigious World Health Organization (WHO) internship.
Mohamad will travel to Geneva on April 25 to work with Dr Amadou Garba and his team in WHO’s Preventative Chemotherapy and Transmission Control Unit for one month. This unit is tasked with preventing and controlling infectious diseases outbreaks internationally. Mohamad will be helping to develop predictive models which estimate the burden of disease of schistosomiasis, spatially, throughout the African continent. He will also be assisting in the formulation of the operational and logistical framework for the roll-out of the schistosomiasis treatment program, including estimating the number of treatments needed, and the costs of these treatments, for a five-year drug intervention program, to be rolled out later in 2016.
WHO offers only a handful of internships per year to outstanding applicants. During his time at WHO, Mohamad will be representative of the outstanding calibre of UQ School of Medicine’s RHD candidates. He will have the opportunity to meet and network with some of the most influential people in the world, discussing both his PhD research and his experiences as a UQ Medical School PhD candidate. The research in which he will participate is likely to result in several publications. As WHO interns are unpaid, SoM has made a generous contribution towards Mohamad’s travel and accommodation expenses.
