Find out more about studying public health at Deakin University

Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This work is achieved through strategies including promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, and detecting, preventing and responding to infectious disease.

Public health is an interdisciplinary field which draws from epidemiology, biostatistics, social sciences and the management of health services. Other important related fields include environmental health, community health, behavioural health, health economics, public policy, health education, occupational safety, and equity issues in health.

Public health professionals aim to prevent or reduce the impact of public health issues by developing programs, recommending policies, administering services and conducting research. This is in contrast to clinical professionals like doctors and nurses, who focus primarily on treating individuals after they become sick or injured.

Deakin’s Master of Public Health offers students opportunities to explore and develop knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Applied research
  • Environments for health
  • Health economics and management
  • Health promotion and community development
  • Public health nutrition
  • Public health practice
