What do Melbourne dental students say about getting ready to study in Australia?
Are you heading to dental school in Australia? You might be wondering, “Are there any specific items I should bring with me?”
What You Need for Dental School
Professional pants to accompany our tunics (bought on campus) for our preclinical and clinical sessions.
Professional yet water “resistant” shoes. They must be wipeable and cover your entire foot. We will be working in the oral cavity (fluids!) and with sharp instruments. These restrictions are put to follow infection control policies.
No suede or laces. No crocs since they are not professional. Leather is recommended. Black (highly recommended)/brown – no white or colourful shoes. Some students wear loafers, as long as they cover your entire foot. Others wear Blundstones, Dr. Martens, etc.
Lab coat and safety goggles.
Supplies that you can also get in Australia for convenience.
A pack of coloured pencils for removable prosthodontics – you will use these to mark your stone cast.
A ruler.
Folders – you will be provided printed sheets for certain courses. Organization is key!
If possible, I would definitely buy teeth or skull models as it is super helpful for studying anatomy.
Living in Melbourne
Melbourne winters are very windy. The buildings have very minimal to no insulation. Please bring your long sleeves, long pants, and a jacket.
It rains, a lot! Pack a rain jacket.
Don’t bring too much clothes and belongings. Student accommodation is small.
I would defining pack some jackets because it does get cold here in the winter (June-August).
Items that are affordable in Canada are much more expensive here (sometimes triple the price). Bring your makeup and curly hair products and do some research on brands here that meet your needs and budget. The same applies to snacks.
About the Melbourne Doctor of Dental Surgery Program
The Melbourne Dental School offers the Doctor of Dental Surgery program which incorporates all aspects related to the provision of advanced general dental care to patients as well as teaches students to prepare, develop, execute and write for publication a small research project.
As part of the four-year, full-time degree, you will spend significant time in provision of patient care, and clinical methods, as well as undertake a two-year research project in oral health. In the final year, you will have the unique opportunity to experience working in a private practice setting, where you will learn how to run a small dental clinic.
