What is the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS)?
The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) is an impartial, not-for-profit organization that provides a fair, transparent, and standardized online process for matching medical students and graduates with residency training positions across Canada.
Founded in 1970, CaRMS has earned a reputation for reliability and integrity among medical students and faculties nationwide. It supports both applicants and residency programs through the use of secure tools and services designed to streamline the residency application and matching process.
CaRMS plays an essential role in supporting the strength of Canada’s medical education system. It is committed to ensuring all aspects of the match process uphold high standards of fairness, equity, accuracy, and transparency.
The CaRMS Match Algorithm
CaRMS uses a globally recognized and rigorously tested matching algorithm to pair applicants with postgraduate medical training programs across Canada. The algorithm, known as the Roth-Peranson algorithm, was co-developed by Alvin E. Roth—who shared the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2012—and Elliott Peranson, president of National Matching Services Inc.
This algorithm is licensed by CaRMS from National Matching Services Inc., a Canadian company that also supports other major matching programs in North America. It prioritizes applicants’ choices while ensuring a stable match outcome for both candidates and programs.
