UQ’s innovative medical researchers recognised
Three University of Queensland researchers have been inducted as fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) at its inaugural scientific meeting.
The Academy named Professor Philip Hugenholtz from the UQ Faculty of Science and Professor Maree Smith and Professor H Peter Soyer from the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences as new fellows at the event on Oct. 6.
The latest induction brings UQ’s total contribution of fellows to 15.
Academy president UQ’s Professor Ian Frazer said he was delighted to welcome the new fellows.
“Their election as fellows reflects the international standing of their contribution to health and medical science through research, through leadership, and through service,” he said.
“Their future contribution to the field will contribute to ensuring that users of the healthcare system in Australia are offered the best quality of care using the latest in advances in health research.”
Academy executive member and UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Robyn Ward said the academy brought together the nation’s leading minds in health and medicine.
“The academy provides a forum to discuss medical research, health care issues, and ways to translate research into practice,” she said.
“Adding three more UQ voices to this conversation ensures that UQ research is shared with the nation, and that our discoveries and knowledge are used to improve the healthcare and quality of life of Australians.”
The AAHMS aims to provide independent advice to government, industry and the community on issues relating to evidence-based medical practice and research in Australia.
