Entry Requirements for the Sydney Dentistry Program
1. Performance in an Undergraduate Degree
Students can apply to Sydney Dental School if they have completed a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, and achieve a grade point average (GPA) of 5.5 out of 7.0 (or equivalent) from a recognized university. The grade requirement is generally equivalent to a GPA of 2.7 out of 4.0.
Sydney Dental School has decided to continue their trial including the results from coursework master degrees in the calculation of the GPA. The trial will be limited to international applicants who are applying in 2014 for enrollment in the Sydney dentistry program in 2015. During the trial, international applicants who hold a master’s degree by coursework as well as a bachelor’s degree will be permitted to either
- nominate their bachelor’s degree for use in the GPA calculation, or
- nominate that both their master’s and their bachelor’s degree be used in the GPA calculation.
The GPA will be calculated on all years of the most recent bachelor’s degree equally, including an honours year if undertaken. Postgraduate research or coursework qualifications are excluded from the GPA calculation. There is no standardized GPA scale used by Canadian universities, and grading systems differ among post-secondary institutions here in Canada.
All Sydney DMD applicants are required to have completed a human biological science degree or, as a minimum, completed one semester of a Biology subject equivalent to the University of Sydney units of study: “Concepts in Biology” BIOL1001 or “Human Biology” BIOL1003 or equivalent. This may be achieved as part of the undergraduate degree or may be studied on a non-degree basis through a winter or summer school program. A degree in medical science will be deemed equivalent.

2. Performance in an Admissions Test: Canadian DAT, U.S. DAT, MCAT, or GAMSAT
Students must achieve a minimum performance in one of the following admissions tests:
- Canadian Dental Aptitude Test (DAT;)
- US Dental Admission Test (DAT); or
- Medical Colleges Admissions Test (MCAT);
- Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admissions Test (GAMSAT).
Most Canadian applicants choose to sit the DAT or the MCAT. All of the above tests are acceptable, and only one is required.
The minimum scores required to be considered for an interview:
- CDAT or DAT: minimum score of 15 in each section (carving score will not be used)
- MCAT: 8/8/8 or 8/8/M/8 or a computerized numerical aggregate of 24 with a grade of M
- GAMSAT: a minimum level of 50 in each of the three sections
Test results from January 2012 onward will be accepted for the 2015 intake.
3. Performance in an Online Interview
Those students whose applications are found to be competitive will be invited to participate in a multiple mini interview (MMI). The MMI aims to sample a candidate’s competencies in order to gain a more accurate picture of strengths, weaknesses and suitability for the Sydney Dental School’s Doctor of Dental Medicine program. International applicants’ interviews will be conducted via an online link using Skype.
