In celebrating and honouring this heritage, we greatly appreciate the support of our generous donors who helped us create the Dental Museum. The collection contributes to the cultural life of the university and by reflecting on the history of dentistry, the museum offers insights into its changes and developments.
“I make special mention of Dr Peter Barnard and Dr Jerry Schwartz who have been integral to making this museum a reality. Thank you for supporting a vibrant and unique resource.”
The Dental Alumni Society Museum was first established in 1956 built on a collection which had been developed since the inception of the faculty in the early twentieth century. The collection consists of 12 display cases with more than 300 items including historically significant dental artifacts, rare books, photographs, and yearbooks.
The artifacts collection includes historic dentures, extraction and drilling instruments in addition to articulators. These artifacts cover the period late 18th century to early 20th century.
To date, the faculty has acquired a ‘Ritter Dental Chair and Tower Unit c.1915–1919’, donated by Dr. Jerry Schwartz.
The historic dental chair is accompanied by appropriate period piece cabinetry, such as book shelving, cabinets and a workbench thus completing the demonstration of a historic dental surgery accompanied by historic artifacts and books. A period piece light has also been donated by the Schwartz Foundation.
The faculty has also photographed all of the historic artifacts with a view of establishing an online museum; and has acquired suitable cabinetry to house some of the collection in Westmead Centre for Oral Health.
