Here, former OzTREKK student, Dominique Lung, is the next generation of world-class dentistry! Dominique began her studies at the University of Melbourne in 2016 after completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta and University of Guelph back home in Canada.

Here’s what she had to say about choosing to study dentistry at one of the best universities in the world.

“I have wanted to be a dentist since I was about nine years old, and I am really happy to have had the opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream. I think that it is amazing that by just completing the Doctor of Dental Surgery I am prepared to work in the field of dentistry straight away,” said Dominique.

She comes from a line of dentists and owes her interest in the field to her early exposure to dentistry as well as her dual interest in science and art.

“Studying at the University of Melbourne gave me an opportunity to travel to another continent and experience a different culture without having to take a break from school. It also gave me a chance for more independence and a chance to be away from home.”

When asked about the advice she would give future dentistry students, Dominique stressed the importance of firsthand experience.

“I would advise other students to shadow or observe a dentist. Pay attention to how they interact with patients and clinic staff. Rather than watching videos or reading about the careers online, firsthand experience is a must and will help you.”

Dominique credits the Melbourne DDS program for developing her dexterity and attention to detail.

“The highlight of my degree was when I entered my second year and began seeing my first patients. It was daunting at first to be seeing real patients, but it was also exciting to be able to use what we have been learning for the past year.”
