Dentistry is a challenging and rewarding profession that is responsible for the total oral health of individuals and the wider community. Good oral health is integral to good general health; thus dentistry is recognised as a primary healthcare profession.
Qualified dentists have the choice of various employment fields:
General Dental Practice
Once registered with the appropriate Dental Board, dentists can enter private practice on their own behalf. Alternatively they may work as an assistant with an established practitioner, join a partnership or work as a locum tenens.
Specialty Practice
Graduates may undertake further study and qualify as a specialist in a recognised field. These fields include Orthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatric dentistry, Prosthodontics, Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine, Maxillofacial Radiology, and Public Health.
Research
Considerable opportunities are available within Australia and overseas in all areas of biomedical science, including clinical science and biotechnology.
Teaching
Graduates with postgraduate experience and higher degrees may apply for permanent lectureships which become available from time to time. Temporary lectureships are occasionally available and may be offered to graduates who intend studying for higher degrees.
