Dentistry is a challenging and rewarding profession that is responsible for the total oral health of individuals and the wider community. Good oral health is integral to good general health; thus dentistry is recognised as a primary healthcare profession.

Qualified dentists have the choice of various employment fields:

General Dental Practice

Once registered with the appropriate Dental Board, dentists can enter private practice on their own behalf. Alternatively they may work as an assistant with an established practitioner, join a partnership or work as a locum tenens.

Specialty Practice

Graduates may undertake further study and qualify as a specialist in a recognised field. These fields include Orthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatric dentistry, Prosthodontics, Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine, Maxillofacial Radiology, and Public Health.

Research

Considerable opportunities are available within Australia and overseas in all areas of biomedical science, including clinical science and biotechnology.

Teaching

Graduates with postgraduate experience and higher degrees may apply for permanent lectureships which become available from time to time. Temporary lectureships are occasionally available and may be offered to graduates who intend studying for higher degrees.

Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) at the University of Queensland

Program: Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc) (Honours)

Entry Requirements

There are two entry pathways in to the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) at the University of Queensland:
1. High School
To be eligible to apply, you must have

  • completed a high school diploma;
  • completed prerequisite subjects Grade 12 English and Chemistry;
  • attained an average of 98% or higher in their top six Grade 12 classes; and
  • not have completed any post-secondary studies.

2. University
To be eligible to apply, you must have

  • partially or fully completed an undergraduate degree;
  • completed prerequisite subjects including Grade 12 English and Chemistry as a minimum or equivalent subjects at university level; and
  • have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 6.5 on a 7-point scale in university studies.

Additionally, all international applicants (those who have completed high school and/or university studies) will be required to sit the International Student Admissions Test (ISAT).
