La Trobe University Unveils $5B University City Masterplan
Get ready for an incredible transformation at La Trobe University! They’ve just unveiled the long-term masterplan for “La Trobe University City,” an ambitious $5-billion initiative that will turn its north Melbourne campus into a thriving, sustainable, and innovative hub over the next 30 years.

This 255-hectare campus development is designed to be a dynamic centre for innovation, knowledge, and sustainability. It’s not just a campus upgrade—it’s creating a whole new community!
The project is expected to significantly boost Melbourne‘s northeast economy and attract more international students to Victoria. Centred on a strong research and innovation ecosystem, the endeavor will leverage La Trobe’s strengths in areas like health innovation, AI, sustainable agriculture, and digital transformation.
La Trobe Chancellor John Brumby, AO, and Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell stress that University City will enhance the quality of life for students and staff, and cement La Trobe as a global university of choice.
A City Built on Learning and Living
La Trobe University City will feature four connected neighbourhoods, designed to bring together living, learning, and working in a sustainable environment.
Housing & Community
The plan includes housing for up to 15,000 people, with a focus on ecologically sustainable and technology-enabled living. This includes dedicated student accommodation and 15% affordable housing.
Education
State-of-the-art facilities will accommodate more than 40,000 students (a 45% increase!), fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
Active Lifestyle
The masterplan includes an already completed world-class sports precinct for teaching, research, and community participation.
Sustainability
More than 1 million square metres of regenerative, climate-resilient open space will be protected and enhanced, including the Nangak Tamboree eco-corridor.
Connectivity
Improved transport networks, pedestrian and cycling links, and even a proposed suburban rail loop train station are part of the plan!
This is truly a bold, purpose-built innovation city where education drives everything. La Trobe is building a connected ecosystem of industry, health, housing, culture, sport, and green space, showcasing a new model for how knowledge and place can come together.
