University of Sydney announces new dean for Nursing and Midwifery

Professor Donna Waters has commenced her role as the University of Sydney’s new Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.

University Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Michael Spence said he looked forward to working with Associate Professor Waters as she leads the faculty and joins the university’s Senior Executive Group.
“I am particularly pleased that, after conducting an international search, we have appointed an existing member of the faculty to the deanship. This is testament to the contribution Donna has made to the faculty, including as Associate Dean (Research), and underlines our commitment to promoting women leaders within the university.”
Professor Waters joined the University of Sydney in 2009, having previously worked at the Children’s Hospital, Westmead, the College of Nursing, and Justice Health NSW. She is a registered nurse with 25 years’ experience in the management of nursing, medical and health services research.
“In my first year as Dean, I am truly excited about continuing the excellent work of Sydney Nursing School in education, research and scholarship,” said Professor Waters.
“I also look forward to strengthening relationships with our clinical and professional partners, both within Australia and internationally.
“Our vision at Sydney Nursing School is to pursue teaching and research excellence in the practices and outcomes of nursing and midwifery, and to prepare graduates who are personally and professional aware.
“The future of health and healthcare relies on nurses and midwives who are competent to work with people in many and varied contexts—professionals who can deliver the most appropriate care, at the right time, in the right place.
“At the same time, I think it’s vital that the focus of our work remains aligned to the genuine needs of individuals, their families and their communities.”

Entry Requirements: A successful applicant for admission to the Master of Nursing will hold a bachelor degree in a discipline other than nursing from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification.
