University of Newcastle teaching expertise honoured

The teaching expertise of University of Newcastle staff members has been recognised by the Commonwealth in the 2014 Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.

Awarded through the Commonwealth Government’s Australian Awards for University Teaching program, the Citations acknowledge quality teaching practice and those who have made significant contributions to student learning.
University of Newcastle Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Andrew Parfitt said the achievement was a testament to the university’s commitment to a first-rate standard of teaching.
“These academics are dedicated to providing the best possible learning experience for their students, and the Citations are a reflection of their exceptional work,” Professor Parfitt said.
Associate Professor Shen Chen, Associate Professor Brett Nixon, Dr Caroline Webb and the Week Zero Team each received a 2014 Citation.

  • Associate Professor Shen Chen, Newcastle School of Education – For developing an innovative approach to supporting international students’ learning in a new cultural environment and providing high-quality teaching in second language teacher education
  • Associate Professor Brett Nixon, School of Environmental and Life Sciences – For promoting student engagement and positively influencing the learning experience by using inspirational teaching strategies centred on science-as-discovery
  • Dr Caroline Webb, School of Humanities and Social Science – For empowering English literature students at a regional campus by drawing on their own responses and experiences and providing a rich understanding of cultural contexts
  • Week Zero Team (Ms Liz Goode, Ms Joyleen Christensen, Ms Angela Henderson, Ms Evonne Irwin, Ms  Deanna McCall, Ms Annette Morante and Ms Amanda Valent), English Language and Foundation Studies Centre – For developing an outstanding and innovative online orientation which has significantly enhanced the engagement and experience of students commencing an online enabling program

Entry Requirements

Applicants to the University of Newcastle Master of Teaching must have

  • at minimum, a three-year undergraduate degree from a recognized university; and
  • a 65% average or above from their undergraduate degree.
