Sydney Law School students at negotiation competition
Congratulations to Sydney Law School student representatives of the third-placed Australian team at the recent INC Negotiation and Arbitration Competition in Tokyo.
Twenty universities participated in the competition this year and the following undergraduate students from Sydney Law School took part:
- Nick Boyce (LLB V)
- Kate Farrell (LLB VI)
- Anna O’Kane (JD II)
- Deborah White (LLB VI)
- Helen Xue (LLB IV)
- Dominique Yong (LLB V)
“The Australian Team included Sydney Law School students as well as those from ANU and Melbourne—creating extra logistical challenges, in addition to having to get in their memorandums very soon after final exams,” said Professor Luke Nottage.
“As well as the usual English-language and Japanese language teams of five each, we had an extra team of five competing in the English division.
“All three teams did very well in the arbitration round (applying the UNIDROIT Principles to a complicated contract dispute) and especially in the negotiation round where they have to reach agreement on a cross-border M&A transaction.”
The Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition is a two-day competition, with both a Japanese-language division and English-language division that gives students an opportunity to compete in mock negotiations and arbitrations.
Tokyo and Kyushu Universities were placed first and second respectively.
Sydney Law School would like to thank the Donors who made the students’ opportunity possible including Baker & McKenzie, Ashurst, Sofico Japan and the Australian subsidiary of Mitsui Matsushima.
The cross-institutional Australian Network for Japanese Law (ANJeL) has supported Australian law students participating in the INC competition since 2005.
