Sydney dentistry reunion
Sydney Dental School graduates from the class of 1988 gathered with their family, friends and colleagues to celebrate this milestone with a gala dinner in May in the beautiful MacLaurin Hall. With 26 years of practice and service to their community since leaving university there are many high achievers in this cohort—notably the Dean of Dentistry, Professor Chris Peck.
Fine food and diverse entertainment ranging from a 1980s Trivia Quiz conducted using mobile phones (not unheard of in dental lectures these days) to dancing and entertaining photo booth shots to document reconnection with friends from student days kept the energy high. In addition to all these activities guests at the event were exposed to leading-edge technology for teaching clinical skills essential for dental practice. Strange, you may say, why here and at a reunion event?
As Professor Peck explained in his short address, a group of alumni from the Class of ’88 had approached him to say they wanted to do something to support current and future students studying dentistry at the University of Sydney. When told of the faculty desire to introduce virtual reality simulation equipment to improve the student experience and help them develop and hone their clinical skills, the concept of a Class of ’88 gift to the Faculty of Dentistry was suggested.
The Dean launched the Class of ’88 Simulation Equipment Appeal at the reunion dinner and invited everyone to try out the equipment. Most people whether dental trained or not tried their hand. This lead to considerable hilarity to see who could achieve the best result in preparing a tooth. All the experienced dentists who tried the simulation equipment were impressed by the sophistication and flexibility of this teaching tool with some heard to comment that their own discipline might want to develop some specialist scenarios for professional development.
The digital simulation units provide a remarkably lifelike sensation to the operator, with the high speed handpieces looking and feeling just like they do in clinical practice. Treatment scenarios can be programmed into the computers and as the software tracks the individuals progress—the student receives objective feedback and a record of progress allowing for individualised learning. The faculty hopes to purchase two units initially.
