Can you specialize in the UQ Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours)?
The University of Queensland’s Bachelor of Veterinary Science Honours degree holds full American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accreditation. This means UQ vet graduates are eligible to sit the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE). AVMA accreditation is well recognized as the international benchmark for quality in veterinary education.
To pass the 360-question NAVLE, you require knowledge across many different species, which is why UQ’s vet science program offers a comprehensive curriculum covering a wide range of veterinary disciplines.
While there aren’t specific streams for specialization within the Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) program, this degree provides ample opportunities for you to delve deeper into areas of interest.
UQ vet professors are specialists in their fields and can provide guidance and advice on how to enhance your experience and exposure to specializations. This will help you to tailor your education to align with your career goals and develop expertise in specific areas of veterinary medicine.
Degree Structure
The UQ BVSc commences with 3 years of foundational training in the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, and behaviour of healthy domestic and wild animals. It includes more than 600 hours of practical training, where you’ll develop your animal handling and husbandry skills and acquire detailed knowledge of animal pathology and diagnostic skills.
In Year 4, you’ll undertake dedicated medicine and surgery courses for each of the major animal species, plus population and public health training, and complete 130 hours of clinical practical work.
The final year includes more than 1,400 hours of lecture-free training within university and privately owned practices.
Practical Placements
Throughout the program you’ll develop your skills in essential clinical and professional competencies such as communication, business skills, and self-development.
You’ll undertake off-campus placements to provide authentic clinical and professional competencies and improve your work-readiness and receive essential hands-on experience at UQ Gatton’s Small Animal Hospital and Equine Specialist Hospital.
Your final year of studies will be a full year of clinical placement, allowing you to specialize in a field that interests you!

UQ Vet’s clinical facilities provide specialist referral services for veterinarians and general services for owners of companion animals, horses, farm stock, exotic pets, and native fauna. The on-site Veterinary Medical Centre includes equine and small animal hospitals, and the production animal service gives our students rural practice experience. Through these facilities, students receive a diversity of experiences and clinical skills to prepare them for careers in companion or production animal veterinary practice, research, government, biosecurity, or within industry.
