Meet one of the brightest smiles from the University of Melbourne Dental School!

Current University of Melbourne Dental School student (and former OzTREKKer), Kunal Mehta, hated going to the dentist when he was growing up.

University of Melbourne Dental School student Kunal used to be scared of the dentist!

Now he’s training to become one himself!

Kunal’s original plan during the first year of his undergrad degree was to attend medical school, but after doing some research and considering other options in the healthcare field, he decided that dental school was the right path for him. He felt that a dentistry degree was a great combination of two things he loved: science and art.

Kunal compares perfecting a jump shot in basketball to filling a cavity: “If I want to better my shooting form and if I am trying to become a better jump shot shooter in basketball, then I am going to be in the gym every day practicing the same form. The same way with dentistry, I’m going to be training my hands and my eyes.”

He explains that basketball and dentistry have many things in common, like manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and muscle memory.

Take it from any dental student: one of the best parts of the program will be the other students in your cohort. Kunal speaks highly of his classmates (many of whom are Canadian!) and reinforces how close the cohort is—after all, you end up spending 10–11 months a year with them! He emphasizes that his classmates are more than just his cohort, they are his friends.
