Overview
The University of Wollongong School of Law develops graduates who are independent thinkers, effective communicators and ethical problem-solvers. The UOW law school is committed to teaching excellence and providing an engaging, practical, and intellectually challenging learning experience.
Students in the School of Law learn how to use legal knowledge and critical thinking to make a real difference in their communities. They explore Australia’s legal system and its social and global contexts, while developing the political, ethical and analytical skills needed to seek justice and shape a fairer society.
Program
The Bachelor of Laws (Direct Entry) covers the prescribed areas of knowledge for future admission to the profession and a choice of electives. Additionally, an integrated skills program equips you with experience in areas such as legal research, interviewing, legal drafting, advocacy, and negotiation.
The UOW Law First Year Program provides all first-year students with the “POD” experience and the support of a First Year Coordinator. The POD experience supports students in their first semester of first year law by studying their courses in the same tutorial group across all four first semester subjects. This enhances the peer experience of law school at UOW. The First Year Coordinator is a dedicated academic staff member providing mentoring and academic support for first year law students at UOW.
Practical Experience
Practical experience is a vital part of your legal training. UOW is the only law school in New South Wales that requires you to complete a legal internship, providing highly valued industry experience. Law students will complete a Legal Internship subject. This subject is the vehicle for practical placement, completed over 4 weeks (totaling 140 hours, at 35 hours per week). It is designed to expose students to the application of the law in practice; enable students to understand the importance of developing the skills of legal research, communication, drafting, practice management, and problem solving; and enable students to observe and reflect upon the values, ethical standards, and conduct of the legal profession in practice.
UOW is committed to social justice and providing a legal education which engages with the complexities of law’s intersection with society. This degree delivers a practical and contextual legal education that prepares graduates not only for traditional careers in the legal profession but also for a wide range of careers in government, business, and community organizations.
