Overview
Murdoch University offers Western Australia’s only veterinary science program. As a Murdoch Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine student, you’ll have the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to solve the existing and emerging problems of our companion animals, livestock, and wildlife.
Since the graduation of the university’s inaugural class in 1979, Murdoch’s free-thinking, inclusive ethos has underpinned their mission to promote and integrate the health, welfare, and productivity of animals and people through partnership:
Education – Empowering graduates’ lifelong professional success
Research – Engaging industry and government in impactful discovery and innovation
Clinical service – Advancing excellence in veterinary science through leadership in the community and the profession
With integrity and excellence at the heart of their vision, Murdoch staff and students passionately promote the health, welfare, and productivity of pets and animals, big and small. Murdoch vet students also receive training in wildlife, exotic pets, and conservation medicine.
3 Reasons to Study Veterinary Science at Murdoch
1. Murdoch’s veterinary science degree is accredited with a number of leading associations around the world, including the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council Inc, American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
2. You’ll learn real-world skills in state-of-the-art facilities that include veterinary teaching hospitals, clinics, and a working farm—all located on the Perth campus.
3. You’ll extend your experience with all species of animals by completing placements with animal shelters, the Perth Zoo, and a wide range of farms and veterinary practices, both in Australia and internationally.
Program
Murdoch’s integrated Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Biology) and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program has established a reputation for excellence since the first class graduated in 1979.
Murdoch’s veterinary degree was the first in Australia to receive accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education, enabling Murdoch veterinary graduates to succeed in many parts of the world, including Canada and the USA.
Since 2014, Murdoch University has offered a 5-year veterinary degree program. Introduction of the DVM has provided opportunities to combine hands-on clinical training, veterinary professional life skills, research experience, and species-group electives (streaming) across the latter years of the degree.
As a Murdoch veterinary student, you’ll be able to build the knowledge and skills you need to meet your career or study goals.
- Veterinary structure and function
- Principles of surgery, anesthesia, and diagnostic imaging
- Processes in animal disease
- Veterinary pharmacology and radiography
- Health and management of production animals
- Avian, wildlife, and exotic pet medicine
The Bachelor of Science encompasses the first 3 years of the program. You’ll study general science in Year 1 but then move to pre-clinical studies in years 2 and 3. In Year 4, you’ll enter the DVM, which operates on 3 trimesters per year.
