Find out more about UQ dental school

UQ dental school is based in the UQ Oral Health Centre. The largest of its size and scope in Australasia, OHC is an award-winning facility that is a hub for delivering high-quality patient care, dental education, and dental research. Inside, there are

  • more than 150 dental chairs throughout 11 different clinics;
  • two general anesthetic theatres;
  • a pre-clinical 2 laboratory for research;
  • two clinical skills simulation labs;
  • two auditoriums;
  • and a seminar room complex complete with multi-modal delivery.

Here, renowned academics and researchers, leading dental care practitioners, and top-tier students participate in the Oral Health Alliance. This partnership between UQ and Metro North Hospital and Health Service is designed to integrate clinical service delivery, clinical innovation, and the education and training of the next generation of oral health professionals.

About the UQ Bachelor of Dental Science program

In the first year of the program, students are introduced to dental practice and oral rehabilitation, and complete courses in oral bioscience and biomedical foundations in oral health.

In second-year students spend time in the pre-clinical laboratories. Inside these pre-clinical labs, students have their own space and mannequins to work on while learning the principles of preventive dentistry, communication and professionalism, and infection control. Students also have access to state-of-the-art dental technology, like surgical microscopes, portable radiographic equipment, the latest rotary equipment, and advanced dental materials used in clinics today.

UQ dentistry’s virtual patients

The goal of these pre-clinics for students to learn the early clinical and technical skills required for competency before they start caring for their own patients at the end of second year.

Throughout years three and four, students spend an increasing amount of time in clinical settings seeing their own patients. Clinical work includes general dental practice, operative dentistry, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and prosthodontics.

In the final year of the program, students undertake a 40-week placement in a variety of clinical settings, including the OHC, as well as government and Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island health service clinics located throughout Queensland.

For a look at these clinical spaces, along with some of the other incredible health and behaviour science facilities that UQ has to offer, take a virtual tour of the UQ dental school! (Click on Health and Behavioural Sciences Tour, Dentistry Labs.)
