Sydney vet researchers helping to build a better future for greyhounds
10 July 2015
Members of the public and industry stakeholders were asked to share their views on greyhound racing in NSW. It is part of a project funded by Greyhound Racing NSW to develop crucial recommendations on current and best practices for the controversial industry, which generates more than $335 million per year in New South Wales. The survey is the first step in the project and will assist the researchers to gain a better understanding of how people view the training and socialising of racing greyhounds. It is being conducted by researchers from the Sydney Faculty of Veterinary Science, LaTrobe University, the University of Bristol and the Working Dog Alliance.
The project will review current Australian and international practices around greyhound management, and identify and recommend best practice for the New South Wales greyhound racing industry. This will inform future policy and development of guidance to industry participants on best practice in rearing, training and retirement planning.
With the greyhound industry recently thrust into the spotlight, the need to appreciate public attitudes towards it has intensified. Survey results will be analysed to assist development of future education and guidance material as well as target specific areas which industry members should focus their efforts on, including methods for improving the welfare of greyhounds.
