Study Dentistry at The University of Otago: No DAT or UCAT Required

29 April 2025

Are you interested in studying dentistry but don’t want to write the DAT and would like to complete your studies in 4 years? We have a degree for that!

Since the UCAT and DAT are not admission requirements for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program, this opens the opportunity for many of you to apply to what is, quite frankly, an amazing program.

University of Otago
This campus though! Learn more about studying dentistry at the beautiful University of Otago!

If you’ve ever talked to our director Jaime on the topic of UOtago before, you will know that she is in love with this uni and country. In addition to being an excellent educational option (Otago is one of the highest-ranked dental programs in the world), you will also be learning within new facilities. The 2020 intake marked the inaugural year of the $130-million, 214-chair, dentistry building (the newest in the southern hemisphere—and perhaps the world)!

University of Otago Bachelor of Dental Surgery

As one of the world’s top dental schools, the primary aim of the faculty is to remain a nationally and internationally recognized leader of academic excellence in the areas of research, education and training, and clinical practice by achieving and retaining a reputation for the highest quality research, teaching, and clinical expertise in each discipline; and by fostering an environment that stimulates intellectual and professional development.

Program: Bachelor of Dental Surgery (graduate entry)
Location: Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand
Intake: February
Duration: 4 years*

*This 4-year graduate-entry accelerated pathway is intended for those with a university degree. While Otago offers a 5-year undergraduate-entry option, direct entry into the second year of the program (Year 2) is very competitive and requires a separate application; therefore, it’s possible that a student may not be issued an offer to continue in the dentistry program.

What does it take to get in?

1. A bachelor’s degree

You must have a completed bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7/4 with the equivalent of all courses in Otago’s “Health Sciences First Year”:

  • Foundations of Biochemistry
