Physiotherapy graduate talks about her weekend adventures in Sydney, Australia

26 August 2020

You know what they say, “all work and no play” makes you a stressed-out student in one of the world’s most beautiful places!

So, when you find yourself in Sydney, take time to enjoy your surroundings! Here are just a few of the hot spots that University of Sydney physiotherapy graduate, Alexis, enjoyed most during her time Down Under.

Melbourne

About a 9 hour drive, or a 1.5-hour flight away, this one’s best to save for a full week off. It’s the capital the most populous city in Victoria, so you know there will be lots to explore! Explore the National Gallery of Victoria, enjoy the thrill of a footy game (a high contact sport on a massive field), take in Melbourne’s thriving music scene.

Hunter Valley

About a 2-hour drive from Sydney, here you’ll find rows of spectacular grapevines nestled between mountain ranges. Think of this like Australia’s Niagara or Okanagan—it’s one of Australia’s top wine regions, with a wine growing culture dating back to the early 1800s. Go on a wine tasting tour, check out the art studios and markets, get in a round of golf, or even take a hot air balloon ride.

Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk

Don’t feel like leaving the city? Take a cliff-top coastal walk from Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach. It’s 6 km of sandy beaches, jagged cliffs, picturesque bays, and incredible rock pools. Bring a picnic along and enjoy lunch on the beaches or at the parks along the way or grab a bit at one of the cafes or restaurants. Feeling ambitious? Continue another 3 km to Maroubra!

Australia Day

It may only happen once a year, but it’s worth taking part in if you’re ever in Australia on January 26. As the country’s official national holiday, events are held all over Australia in celebration. In Sydney, take in traditional Aboriginal ceremonies, enjoy ferry races, and watch an incredible performance of dancing yachts, jet-skis, and pyrotechnics choreographed to music. Close out the day with an awe-inspiring fireworks display!

From sports to art, urban adventures to fun in nature, a long list of memorable experiences awaits!
