New director at Melbourne public health school

Internationally renowned health economist Professor Barbara McPake has been appointed director of the Nossal Institute for Global Health at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health.

Professor McPake is a distinguished scholar with a substantial international reputation. She is a health economist specializing in health policy and health systems research in low- and middle-income countries.
Since 2005, she has been Professor of International Health and Director of the Institute for International Health and Development at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. She is also a Research Director of ReBUILD, a UK Department for International Development (DFID) funded Research Program Consortium on health systems development.
Previously, she was senior lecturer in Health Economics in the Department of Public Health and Policy at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where she was also the Program Director, DFID Health Systems Development Knowledge Program.
Professor Stephen Smith, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University welcomed Professor McPake and said she was an international leader in the study of health systems and financing in emerging economies.
“Her extensive research has involved studies in Africa, Pakistan, Thailand, Nepal, and most recently Indonesia to name a few. She has supervised numerous doctoral students and has published extensively in leading international journals,” he said.
“Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a deep understanding of the complex interplay between health and economics.”
Professor Terry Nolan, Head of Melbourne School of Population and Global Health was looking forward to have Professor McPake lead the Nossal Institute.
“Professor McPake has had extensive international experience in health systems research and policy analysis and has been an advisor to UN agencies,” he said.
“She has been a collaborator with the Nossal Institute and is well known to us. In 2010, she led an Australian Government review of the AusAID (now Australia Aid within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) Knowledge Hubs Program.”
Professor McPake will succeed retiring Foundation Director, Professor Graham Brown AM, in July.
