New course aims to ease transition for new Sydney JD students

In 2014, Sydney Law School introduced a new learning unit as part of its Juris Doctor (JD) program.

“Legal Reasoning” complemented the compulsory unit of study, “Contracts” and enhanced the teaching and learning experience for new  Sydney JD students.
“The course was developed in response to feedback provided to us by JD students,” said Andrew Dyer, Sydney Law School’s Colin Phegan Lecturer. “It was well-received by students,” he continued, “and we will be offering it again in 2015.”
The unit’s main aims are to provide JD students with guidance about how to read legal material, particularly cases, and to assist them with problem-solving skills.
“It also provides JD students with an opportunity to receive feedback about written work before they are required to complete any great amount of formal assessments,” said Andrew. “And it ensures that students have someone in the faculty with whom they can speak if they are experiencing any difficulties with their studies—or anything else—during the early stages of their degree.
“We believe it is a unique offering among an already competitive Australian Juris Doctor (JD) market.”
In 2015, the course’s scope will expand to include material from another first semester compulsory unit, “Torts.”
More information is to be released shortly.
