International Court of Justice elects former Dean of Sydney Law School

Professor James Crawford AC SC has been elected to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
A former Dean of the University of Sydney Law School, he is the second Australian ever to be elected as a judge of the ICJ, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.

Professor Crawford received a majority of votes in the United Nations General Assembly, and Security Council, to secure a position as one of 15 judges of the Court. He will serve a term of office of nine years, beginning in February 2015.
He is Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge and Fellow in Law at Jesus College, Cambridge.
Professor Crawford has a long association with the University of Sydney, where he was appointed Challis Professor of International Law in 1986 and served as Dean of Sydney Law School from 1990 to 1992.
He becomes the first Australian since Sir Percy Spender KCVO KBE QC to be elected to the ICJ. Sir Percy, an alumnus of Sydney Law School, served on the ICJ between 1958 and 1967 and was its President from 1964 to 1967.

  • Completed an undergraduate degree;
  • Achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average (cGPA) of at least 3.0/4.0
