Gabori book launch at Bond Abedian School of Architecture

The work of one of Australia’s best known Indigenous artists, Mrs Sally Gabori, was unveiled at Bond University, with the launch of the book Gabori: The Corrigan Collection of paintings by Sally Gabori.

Mrs Gabori started painting in her eighties and gained international acclaim for her bold and emotive artwork which has been featured in renowned galleries across the world, including the National Gallery of Australia, Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Musee du Quai Branly in Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Aboriginal Art in The Netherlands.
The Abedian School of Architecture at Bond University houses 20 original Gabori pieces courtesy of patron Dr Patrick Corrigan AM, which served as the backdrop for the event on Friday, May 8.
Mrs Gabori’s paintings pay homage to her traditional homeland on Bentinck Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, an island inhabited by the Kaiadilt people for thousands of years.
Art collector Dr Patrick Corrigan AM has acquired a significant collection of Gabori’s works, which provided much of the material for the book, Gabori.
“The first time I saw her artwork I was blown away. Her paintings are so powerful and emotive,” said Dr Corrigan.
“This book follows Gabori’s earlier island life and later career as an artist of international repute, providing a unique opportunity to learn about and revel in the colour and spontaneity of the artist and her art.
“Sally Gabori put her soul on the canvas, and this book hopes to provide a window into her story and how she came to paint in the last decade of her life.”
Mr Mark Ella AM, Wallaby legend and International Rugby Hall of Fame inductee, was also in attendance to officially launch the book.
