It’s not surprising that dental school is a big undertaking—there’s a lot to learn and only so much time to learn it all. So, what exactly does study-life balance look like for dental students in Australia?

Canadian dentists Dr. Geroche and Dr. Pavi recently shared what their experience was like at the University of Melbourne Dental School. Spoiler: They really enjoyed their time there!

Dr. Geroche was quick to point out that Melbourne is a fantastic city to live in as a student. In fact, for the last several years, the Economist Intelligence Unit has consistently ranked Melbourne as the most or second most livable city in the world.

Why? Well, in part because there lots of things to see and do, from sports and art to restaurants and outdoor adventures. With the beach only being a quick tram ride from campus, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to both study and work on your tan.

But what good is a city like that if you don’t have the time to enjoy it? Thankfully, the University of Melbourne realizes the importance of students having a good study-life balance. The school encourages students to take breaks and socialize with other students. They of course want students to succeed in their studies, but part of that success comes from doing more than sitting in a library all day.

With that in mind, Dr. Pavi noted that she saw a big difference in how her Australian peers studied in comparison to her Canadian friends.

“The Australian students were so chill and laid back. Us Canadians… we were all at the library and the library was bare… You’ll realize that they’re so laid back compared to us and then you turned out to become more laid back.”

Study difference aside, Dr. Pavi felt at home in Melbourne, in large part because of the people.

“They’re really friendly and there’s a lot of international students, like Canadians, in Australia. You’ll meet a lot of people. You’ll feel like you’re at home basically…”

Basically, if you’re looking for a top-notch dental degree and a lifestyle with time to meet new people, go on adventures, and learn more about yourself, Australia could be a great fit!
