CAPR Announces New Exam for Prospective Physiotherapists
The Canadian physiotherapy landscape is evolving!
The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR) has announced the upcoming launch of the Canadian Physiotherapy Examination (CPTE), a new entry-to-practice exam that will replace the current Physiotherapy Competency Exam.

With the exception of Quebec, Canadian physiotherapy regulators have agreed to adopt the CPTE as the national licensure standard. This exam will ensure consistent assessment of the fundamental knowledge required for safe, effective, and independent physiotherapy practice nationwide.
The CPTE will evaluate essential clinical and non-clinical competencies for entry-level practice using various methods, including traditional and multimedia-enhanced multiple-choice questions (incorporating images and videos) and oral questions. The exam will be delivered virtually, increasing accessibility for candidates in Canada and internationally.
The first CPTE session is scheduled for January 2026 (pending final agreement on transition plans with Canadian physiotherapy regulators), with registration opening in July 2025 for all 2026 exam dates. Further information regarding the CPTE, including transition details, eligibility, exam format, and FAQs, will be released soon.
This change follows the the CAPR’s new Pre-Approved Credentialling Pathway (PACP), now available for physiotherapists trained in select countries, including Australia.
