Curtin Midland and the Kalgoorlie Rural Health campus provide you with opportunities to undertake placements and training opportunities beyond Perth in nearby health facilities.

The overall aim of the Curtin Medical School is to graduate competent doctors ready to practice safely and effectively, with care and compassion for patients and their families. As a Curtin Medical School MBBS graduate, you’ll develop an understanding of medical and scientific knowledge, communication and clinical skills, skills as a health advocate, an awareness of ethical and professional responsibilities to patients, and strategies to cope with the challenges of medicine.

Program

Curtin University’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is a 5-year undergraduate-entry medical degree open to high school leavers and those with completed bachelor degrees.

In first year, MBBS students are introduced to problem-based learning and participate in structured activities that take students into the community.

The second and third years include intensive study of the structure and function of the human body in health and disease, using a problem-based learning approach. You’ll continue to have opportunities to experience a range of healthcare settings.

In the fourth year, there is a transition from learning on the university campus to learning in the clinical setting. You’ll be offered a variety of clinical experiences including placements in outer metropolitan, rural, and regional locations, in both community and hospital settings.

In the fifth and final year of study, you’ll work in clinical settings as a member of a healthcare team. Training in the clinical settings will be in a range of different environments to prepare you for your internship.

The course is underpinned by 4 interrelated curriculum domains, integrated across the 5 years. These domains reflect the multifaceted role of the doctor:

Clinical Practitioner Domain
The clinical, procedural, and communication skills essential for clinical practice.

Professional and Leader Domain
Commitment to professional values and high-quality clinical practice, including ethics, law, and working as a member of an interprofessional healthcare team; and understanding of the importance of maintaining personal well-being.

Health Advocate Domain
Knowledge of health systems, and the cultural, socio-economic and physical environmental factors that contribute to health and illness, disease, and treatment at the population level.

Scientist and Scholar Domain
Knowledge of the biological, clinical, epidemiological, social and behavioural sciences underpinning medicine and clinical practice.
