UQ occupational therapy program placements

21 January 2015

At UQ Occupational Therapy School, students’ fieldwork experiences are integrated throughout the entire academic program. In the first semesters of the occupational therapy program, clinical experiences are undertaken within course frameworks. In the final semesters of the graduate-entry, master’s program, more intensive placements are provided, with students required to complete block placements across a range of clinical settings.

Placement courses

UQ Occupational Therapy students are required to complete 1020 hours of supervised placement throughout the duration of their program. Some clinic placements are outside the Brisbane metropolitan area and students are expected to fund their travel, accommodation and daily living expenses. Students submit their interest and preferred areas for placements. Accommodation may be at local nurses quarters for Queensland Health placements for a minimal cost. Full-time placements are of 5 or 10 weeks duration and occur in the summer and second year of the program. Allocation will be as equitable as possible and issues of hardship will be dealt with at the discretion of the Head of Division.
Students cannot undertake placements outside Australia and New Zealand except

  1. International students may be permitted to undertake a placement in their home country;
  2. Placements which are arranged by UQ staff in conjunction with another university as part of an established fieldwork exchange relationship;
  3. Placements in developing countries supervised by UQ staff (or staff of other approved universities in an established placement program). For all overseas placements, the student must have an acceptable prior level of performance and the Course Coordinator must approve the timing of the placement.
