UQ School of Dentistry 5th year students Bethany Fisher, Dayea Oh and Ashleigh Wong were recently selected to travel to the University of Hong Kong (HKU) to undertake a two-week placement in the Faculty of Dentistry as part of the New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship Program.
Bethany, Dayea and Ashleigh observed undergraduate and masters students in various departments of HKU including Paediatric dentistry and Implant dentistry. The students had the opportunity to see a range of different treatments including complex and interesting cases some of which they had not experienced before.
Ms Fisher said a highlight of the university experience for her was the opportunity to watch the HKU masters students work with patients who were under general anaesthesia.
“It was a completely new experience for me and one I very much enjoyed.”
The New Colombo Plan Scholarship Program is an Australian Government initiative that provides opportunities for Australian undergraduates to undertake semester-based exchanges, and internships or mentorships in selected Indo-Pacific locations.
Ms Wong said she was extremely grateful to be selected for the placement.
“It was an invaluable experience from which I have learnt a lot.
“The university staff for the most part were extremely welcoming and inviting and really went out of their way to make sure I was getting as much out of the experience as possible,” Ms Wong said.
The UQ dentistry students were also invited to sit in on guest lectures and treatment planning seminars. As most of the communications were in English the language barrier was minimal.
Both Ms Fisher and Ms Wong would recommend the program to other students and encourage future students to apply.
“I had an absolutely incredible time and would recommend it to any student in a heartbeat. The experience was invaluable and I enjoyed every minute,” said Ms Fisher.
