Sydney Dentistry student shares her journey with OzTREKK

13 March 2014

All of us at OzTREKK know the joy (and frustrations) of travelling, and we wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything! We love to encourage students to pursue their dreams of international study. Visiting different parts of the world and experiencing different cultures is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself. The world is such an amazing place, and when you study internationally, you enrich your life and experience different points of view, you gain a worldwide network of colleagues and friends, and you gain an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Taipei was one of Brett’s stops on her way to Sydney

New Sydney Dental School student Brett Baloun stepped out of her comfort zone and decided to leave Manitoba for the beautiful Australian harbour. Brett is now in settled in Sydney, pursuing her dream to become a dentist! Before being totally immersed in her studies, Brett decided to share her story of travelling to Australia and meeting fellow University of Sydney DMD students. We hope her story encourages you to pursue your dreams!
My trip from Brandon to Calgary, Vancouver to Taipei to Sydney was very long and very exhausting, but well worth the $1,100 flight cost. And travelling on my own in another country was a great experience. I was brave and travelled throughout Taipei going to the MaoKong Gondola, visiting temples, tea houses and the Beitou hot springs. It was actually easier to figure out the transit system there than it has been in Sydney!

Sydney DMD students Brett Baloun and Paola Gjini both applied through OzTREKK

Although I missed the OzTREKK Welcome Breakfast, Matt was able to pick me up from the airport, so that was great! I arrived in time for Australia Day, January 26, and I was able to do some sightseeing.
The international students bonded quickly, before school even started. It seems like nearly everyone went through OzTREKK. The few who went through another company were far less prepared or organized, and definitely disappointed that they hadn’t been with OzTREKK, too.
The photo to the left is of Paola and me on our first day in the simulation clinic. Although we were just getting a basic orientation, everyone was very excited to finally feel like we were in dentistry after a long week of attending medical lectures!
Everything has gone pretty well, and although the faculty is a little more disorganized than we would like, we rely a lot on the upper years to help us figure out the set-up. The only people in a hurry down here seem to be the people trying to catch the train! Bit by bit, we’re figuring out what is expected of us and what we have in store. I’m sure it’s going to be a tough four years, but I am very glad I made the decision to come here and I very much appreciate all of OzTREKKs help! Without OzTREKK, I would not have considered applying to Australia. You guys made the process as simple as possible, and gave great and much-needed advice in all areas!
