Bollywood film festival and conference at the University of Newcastle

A century of Bollywood will be celebrated and explored at a University of Newcastle film festival and conference from February 20 and 21.

Featuring prominent industry experts including Sea Change and Rabbit-Proof Fence producer John Winter, the event will enhance understanding of the Bollywood genre and encourage professional collaborations.
“Bollywood has successfully transcended the confines of India, urging scholars to discuss its global histories,” said filmmaker and conference convener Dr. Vikrant Kishore.
The Bollywood 101 Film Festival, to be held at Tower Cinema, will include presentations from film producers and screenings of Dancing to the Bollywood Tunes, a documentary featuring interviews with leading Bollywood directors, actors and dancers; I Am Megha, a story of friends separated by conflict; and Raajneeti, a political thriller about a student who becomes embroiled in politics and murder.
The “Bollywood And Its Others Conference,” to be held at the University of Newcastle Callaghan campus, will explore issues relating to Bollywood including its representation of ethnic minorities, women in Bollywood, dance and music, and the industry’s genre and arthouse films.
“Through this conference, the University of Newcastle can play an important role in understanding Australian-Indian film connections,” said conference co-convener Dr. Susan Kerrigan, University of Newcastle School of Design, Communication and IT.
Other expert speakers include the Consul General of India in Sydney, Arun Kumar Goel, 2014 Australia Day Ambassador Kumud Merani, filmmaker Anupam Sharma and photographer and film producer, Raj Suri.
