Program

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a 4-year postgraduate program open to students from a wide range of undergraduate degrees.

The aim of the program is to produce doctors who are excellent clinicians who are able to practice in a variety of clinical settings. Graduates will be committed to lifelong learning through reflective practice, engagement in research, and demonstration in highly developed clinical skills and judgment in the context of evidence-based practice.

Ethical issues in professional life underpin the Notre Dame MD program as well as the principles of patient-centred care and professional medical practice. Health and illness across a range of populations will be explored throughout the program with an aim to address disparities in health and health care delivery.

The Notre Dame Australia School of Medicine is committed to providing an education that not only teaches the science and craft of medicine, but also develops passionate and devoted medical practitioners. It is for this reason that their entry requirements are based on so much more than your test scores, with traits such as passion, motivation, and purpose highly regarded.

The first two years of your degree are underpinned by problem-based learning (PBL) and include the study of basic clinical sciences, population and preventive health, bioethics, therapeutics and more.

Your third and fourth years are clinically based and present the opportunity to explore the different disciplines of medicine such as pediatrics and surgery. You are required to complete 8- to 9-week discipline-based rotations in a clinical setting, and further develop your research skills with a translational research project based in the health sector. There are rural/remote training opportunities and for some students, placement with the Rural Clinical School in Year 3.

Doctor of Medicine in Sydney, New South Wales
As the only medical program offered by a Catholic university in Australia, the Doctor of Medicine aims to develop and train caring and ethical doctors imbued with the values of compassion, respect, and service. All students at Notre Dame undertake a Core Curriculum component of the study that involves an exploration of bioethics in the first year of the program.

The first and second years of your studies provide a solid foundation for your medical degree. You’ll have the opportunity to undertake problem-based learning tutorials conducted by medically qualified tutors, clinical and communication skills sessions, workshops, clinical debriefing tutorials and site visits. In the second year, you will begin to work on a research-based or professionally focused project.

In the third year, you will undertake a series of clinical placements in in hospitals and community settings where you will engage with patients, their families and the healthcare professionals caring for them. This strong focus on experiential learning is further complemented by a series of weekly Back-to-Base Days, in which you will return to your principal clinical school for short case tutorials, grand rounds, journal club sessions, and expert guest lectures.

Your fourth and final year will see you complete further clinical placements. You will explore a range of disciplines in a range of health settings and present your project for examination in the Applied Research Project course of study. Following the fourth-year end-of-year examinations, you will commence a 4-week elective learning period where you can extend your medical knowledge in an area of personal interest.

Clinical Placements
Clinical placements and rural work experiences are included in both programs. MD students are to complete all clinical placements including after-hours work and attend all rural experiences.

Your third and fourth years are clinically-based and present the opportunity to explore the different disciplines of medicine. You will complete discipline-based rotations in a clinical setting.

  • Year 3 rotations include pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, general practice, surgery, and medicine.
  • Year 4 rotations include general practice, surgery, medicine, ICU – intensive care, ED – emergency, and psychiatry.

Admission Requirements

1. Completed bachelor’s degree
Completed bachelor’s degree with weighted GPA of roughly a 2.9/4.0, calculated on the last 3 full-time years of your degree. For students in a 4-year degree, the weighting will be calculated by final year x3, third year x2, second year x1. Your first year will not be included in this calculation.

2. Admissions test
Must have achieved a minimum MCAT score of 500, completed within 3 years of program commencement (January 2023 onward). GAMSAT with minimum standard of 50 in each section.

3. Interviews
If eligible, students will receive a multi-mini interview (MMI) invitation. The MMI is scored on a rubric and constitutes 50% of your score, combined with 50% from GPA/MCAT or GAMSAT. You will be asked 5 separate interview questions. The interview will be recorded with the use of an online interviewing software tool, Modern Hire.

Students ranked as competitive will be invited to a panel interview. This is an opportunity to meet the faculty, learn about the school and program, and let the faculty know about you.

“The hands on training is phenomenal”

The instructors in the Doctor of Medicine are often clinicians/industry experts that have a wealth of knowledge. I will admit, some are not meant to be teachers, however you will soon learn which instructors are good, and which ones that you might want to...find external study resources for. The hands on training is phenomenal, even as a small uni, they still manage to have great simulation facilities and even cadaver labs. The course structure will be very confusing at first, ... “I would recommend this university because they seem to be more holistic in their approach towards medicine”

I like that the university is small but that also has its drawbacks. At this moment, I do not feel like cattle in a farm but an exotic bird at a rich person's home where I do get individual attention. I like to go to the gym but there isn't one at the university which was a bit challenging but the university set up a partnership with a local gym. I am not a fan of their grading system since most of the grading occurs at the end of the year and that leaves little room for error ... Read More

“Notre Dame also does small group learning which is my favourite parts of the week”

The course structure is a mix of lecture, labs, and small group learning. Tutors are matched up with each small group and they bring their real life experience to help us learn and work through case studies. There are many school events that take place to keep students engaged and included. I dislike the structure of the classes/ lectures as the lecturers don't always get through the content in their time slot. I also find that sometimes lecturers assume that students have prio...
