Program
With a Master of Teaching degree from Adelaide University, you’ll gain a solid foundation in teaching theories and methods alongside extensive practical experiences to build your skills in real classrooms. You’ll explore educational philosophies to develop your own unique teaching style. You’ll learn how to support your students by creating safe, inclusive and culturally responsive classrooms.
Primary
The Master of Teaching (Primary) is a 2-year pathway to becoming an inspiring and effective primary school teacher. Your qualification is recognized to educate children from Kindergarten (the foundation year of school) to Grade 6.
Throughout your studies, you’ll explore the history and philosophies of primary education, understanding how past methods have shaped modern teaching. Discover how young brains acquire knowledge and develop proven ways to help your students process and store new information.
You’ll learn how to engage with your students safely and inclusively, and how to build respectful and harmonious classrooms. You’ll gain leadership and advocacy skills to support children of all abilities and backgrounds. With First Nations perspectives embedded throughout the degree, you’ll also develop sensitive and culturally responsive teaching practices. With 65 days (520 hours) of placements across 2 years, you’ll gain the confidence and skills to step straight into your teaching career.
Secondary
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is future-focused and digital-first 2-year program designed to meet the changing education landscape. Designed for applicants with an undergraduate degree spanning two areas of expertise, it equips you to confidently impart your knowledge in secondary school settings (Grades 7–12).
You’ll learn to design lesson plans, manage classrooms and assess learning, ensuring every student reaches their potential. You’ll explore big ideas for societal change and practical tips for everyday teaching, with two 30-day placements to build your confidence in the classroom.
Admission Requirements
Completed bachelor’s degree
Admission is competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee entry.
Primary – A completed bachelor’s degree or higher from a recognized higher education institution with a minimum GPA of 2.7/4.0 and with a total of one year, full-time equivalent study that aligns with one or more learning areas.
Secondary – A completed bachelor’s degree or higher from a recognized higher education institution with a minimum GPA of 2.7/4.0, and completion of a major from the Australian Curriculum Learning Area in which you intend to specialize. To qualify for a learning area, the major must consist of a minimum of 6 courses, with at most 2 at a first-year university level and at least 2 at a third-year level.
