Program

In the Flinders Bachelor of Laws – Legal Practice Entry program, you will focus on professional legal skills and critical perspectives on the function of law in society. You will develop high-level communication, presentation, and teamwork skills in preparation for practicing law, or for future leadership roles in a range of educational and professional settings.

The degree provides you with practical experience that prepares you for the workforce. You will

  • study the practical legal topics required to be admitted to legal practice;
  • undertake Work-Integrated Learning placements for practical legal topics; and
  • get hands-on experience through Flinders’ Legal Advice Clinic.

The Flinders LLB – LP will

  • provide you with sound training in law and legal skills;
  • emphasize the acquisition on foundation legal skills through the integration of skills training with the teaching of substantive subjects;
  • instill you with a desire for just outcomes, a broad outlook on law, and a commitment to ethical conduct; and
  • help you to develop an innovation and entrepreneurial mindset to respond to 21st-century opportunities.

Flinders is the only South Australian university offering an integrated and accredited Laws and Legal Practice program so you can undertake your Practical Legal Training (PLT) topics as the final part of your degree, saving you time and money and allowing you to start practicing sooner.

First year
A typical first year may include core topics that will give you a strong foundation for later substantive law topics including Introduction to Law and Justice; Essential Legal Skills; Ethics and Professional Responsibility; Legal Innovation; Indigenous Peoples, Colonialism and Law; International Law and Global Perspectives; Criminal Law and Procedure; and Innovating Social Justice.

Second year
A typical second year may include core topics like Torts; Contracts; Property, Equity and Trusts; Jurisprudence; Real Property Law; Corporate Law; and two law option topics to develop areas of interest.

Third year
A typical third year may include core topics like Administrative Law; Constitutional Law; Civil Procedure, and Evidence; Law in a Digital Age; and Law in Action; and two law option topics to develop areas of interest.

Fourth year
A typical fourth year allows you to select three law option topics to further develop areas of interest.

The Bachelor of Laws – Legal Practice may also be studied in conjunction with another bachelor’s degree, such as a Bachelor of Business. Please contact OzTREKK for more information about this option.

Practical Experience/Placement
Students participate in Work Integrated Learning as part of this course. Topics include Law In A Digital Age, where you will be engaged by real-world clients to use technology to solve a legal problem; and Law in Action, where you’ll undertake a semester-long placement for one day a week in either the Flinders Legal Centre, Digital Law Lab, or with an industry partner.
