Sydney Medical School students participate in Oxfam Trailwalker

19 August 2014

A group of Sydney Medical School students are super-psyched to push themselves to the limit for an amazing cause this Friday, August 22!
In support of Oxfam Trailwalker, the four students aim to raise money by walking 100 km. The challenging Sydney trail features the well-known Great North Walk and the Harbour to Hawkesbury Walking Track which lie in the rugged and beautiful bushland of northern Sydney.

“The Walking Med” will be hiking 100 km!

Two of the medical students, Kate and Adam, are OzTREKK students! They will start the trek as “The Walking Med,” but may finish looking more like The Walking Dead!
Who is Oxfam?
One person in three in the world lives in poverty. Oxfam is determined to change that world by mobilising the power of people against poverty. Oxfam Trailwalker began in 1981 as a military training exercise for the elite Queen’s Gurkha Signals Regiment in Hong Kong. It has since grown into one of the world’s leading team endurance challenges.
Around the globe, Oxfam works to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. They save lives and help rebuild livelihoods when crisis strikes, and campaign so that the voices of the poor influence the local and global decisions that affect them. Oxfam works with partner organisations and alongside vulnerable women and men to end the injustices that cause poverty.
Oxfam Trailwalker around the world

Oxfam Trailwalker is fast becoming a global phenomenon. In 2014 Oxfam Trailwalker will take place in India, New Zealand, Spain, Japan, France, UK, Belgium, Ireland and Hong Kong

Globally, the events have raised more than $140 million for Oxfam’s valuable work in Australia and around the world, with more than 200,000 people taking part and becoming great ambassadors for Oxfam’s work.

Oxfam Trailwalker in Australia

Oxfam Trailwalker launched in Australia in 1999, with events in both Sydney and Adelaide raising more than $250,000. A Melbourne event replaced Adelaide in 2003, and in 2011 Brisbane hosted its first Oxfam Trailwalker. In 2013 the inaugural Oxfam Trailwalker Perth event took place in October.
Oxfam Trailwalker is Australia’s original 100km team challenge! Oxfam Trailwalker currently takes place in Melbourne (April), Brisbane (June), Sydney (August) and Perth (October). In 2013, 2,000 teams took part in Oxfam Trailwalker across Australia, with the support of more than 2,500 volunteers and 6,000 support crew members, and raised more than $6 million. Since 1999, more than 52,000 people have participated in the event and have collectively raised more than $55 million.
Our OzTREKK students, Adam and Kate, have promised to send us photos of their amazing journey. Stay tuned!
