About the University of Melbourne Dental School
The Mission of the Melbourne Dental School is to be a world-class, research-based school, offering education of the highest quality and to play a leading national and international role with particular relevance to the Asia-Pacific region.
In recent years, the school has attracted more research funding than any other dental school in Australia and in 2003–4 established a Cooperative Research Centre for Oral Health Science and the Victorian Centre for Oral Health Science. The school has a major commitment to undergraduate dental education and the training of dental therapists and dental hygienists. It is at the forefront of graduate dental education and has Australia’s largest postgraduate program. It also offers a variety of exciting and valuable continuing professional development programs for dental practitioners. The diverse range of Australian and international students from many social and ethnic backgrounds provides a stimulating intellectual environment which enhances the learning experience for all students at the school.
The Melbourne Dental School has a strong tradition in dental research and an established international reputation in several research areas. Research in the school is an integral component of staff and student activities underpinning both the undergraduate and graduate curricula. The school is ranked as the leading dental research organisation in Australia by the Department of Education, Science and Training. Globally it has been ranked together with the leading dental schools at Harvard University and the University of Toronto based on the achievements of its staff and students. The major research activities of the school are conducted by four major research groups which cover a vast area of scientific research from basic science to clinical studies and involve a range of scientific disciplines.

About the Melbourne Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) Program
Melbourne Dental School offers the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), which incorporates all aspects related to the provision of advanced general dental care to patients as well as teaches students to prepare, develop, execute and write for publication a small research project.
Students will spend their entire final year in clinical settings including the planned Melbourne Dental School private dental clinic, community health centres and rural community clinics which will include provision of oral health care to the aboriginal community. Students will also learn how to run a private practice based on a small-business model.
