Canadian and Australian nursing programs at the university level are similar. To become a registered nurse, you need to complete a Bachelor of Nursing degree, a program which is available at many Australian universities. Alternatively, you can complete a general undergraduate degree and then progress into a two-year, graduate-entry master's degree which trains you to work in the nursing profession. For information on graduate-entry professional nursing programs, please visit OzTREKK's postgraduate/professional Nursing web pages.
Canadian students have numerous options for undergraduate nursing studies in Australia. The Bachelor of Nursing degrees offered by OzTREKK's Australian university partners are intended for high school graduates who wish to begin a career in nursing, or for nurses with college diplomas who wish to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Nursing.
Nursing graduates with a Canadian college diploma may apply for advanced standing/credit for previous studies toward an Australian Bachelor of Nursing degree. Past OzTREKK nursing students with college diplomas have been granted credit for one semester of study, up to one full year of credit for their previous studies. It is important to note, however, that this credit may not be awarded for Year One subjects, which means that your Bachelor of Nursing degree will likely take three years to complete, with some of your semesters involving part-time studies. The Australian Government will permit you to work part time during your university studies as an international student. Contact OzTREKK for more information about advanced standing for college diploma nursing graduates.
Each Australian nursing program varies in its offering, but they all include clinical placements and are accredited in their respective Australian states.
